Building partnerships through creativity and justice
Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) in research has never been more recognised and important in health and care research. It’s important for people to have a say in publicly funded research and be given the opportunity to make decisions, shape, and learn about research which might affect them; to work with research in a way that is done ‘for’ or ‘with’ them, rather than ‘to’ or ‘about’ them. Public involvement in research can make research stronger and more relevant.
For the second year, a team of experts, including our PPIE lead Dr Kristin Liabo, have developed an informative and thought-provoking summer school designed for anyone with an interest in PPIE and embedding patient and public involvement in their work and research. First held in 2023, it will be relevant to health and care researchers and people in PPIE co-ordinator/facilitator roles in both health and care services and academic institutions.
Called Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) Summer School 2024: Building partnerships through creativity and justice the summer school represents an opportunity to, ‘go beyond the numbers and rhetoric and explore innovative and honest ways of generating and disseminating knowledge and foster uptake by building constructive and creative relationships.’ Examining innovative ways of generating and spreading knowledge, there will be an online introduction on 20th March, followed by a 3 day in person Summer School beginning on July 3rd with a range of expert speakers.
Dr Kristin Liabo said: “To understand the world through research, we need to work with the world and people in it, not treat it as separate to us. We look forward to days of sharing and co-creating further knowledge on positive engagement, first online at the introductory day and then in person in Exeter. Our hope is that people will leave feeling inspired and ready to do more, and more creative, engaged research”.
